In a vital move to combat poverty and secure coastal communities, the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) has launched a strategic partnership with Partido State University (ParSU), through Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Raul G. Bradecina, to fast-track the implementation of small-scale fisheries guidelines.ย
Funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), this collaboration aims to transform local fishing industries by adopting the Food and Agriculture Organizationโs (FAO) standards that prioritize food security, sustainable marine resource management, and the direct empowerment of small-scale fisherfolk.ย
As part of this initiative, ParSU hosted a validation workshop in the boardroom earlier today. The event featured Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer, Professor, Scientist, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of UPV, and Ms. Jinky C. Hopanda, Project Technical Specialist of UPV. Participants included representatives from Municipal Agriculture Offices, Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils, and leaders of local fisherfolk associations.ย
This PCAARRD-funded initiative elevates ParSU as a critical regional leader within the Too-Big-To-Ignore (TBTI) Philippines national consortium, empowering the university to translate international FAO standards into direct, life-changing action for small-scale fisherfolk across the Partido area. By spearheading these local engagement and validation efforts, ParSU is bridging the gap between global policy and grassroots survival, reinforcing its role as a primary engine for community development, food security, and the protection of marine resources for future generations.ย
UPV implements the project in collaboration with partner institutions, including Batangas State University ARASOF-Nasugbu, Mindanao State University at Naawan, ParSU, and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.ย
