In a step toward sustainable, cost-efficient aquaculture, researchers and experts convened at Partido State University (ParSU) to assess the progress of an innovative project that transforms agricultural waste into aquafeed and to explore new research opportunities for future funding.ย The Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD) of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) conducted a Monitoring and Evaluation, Field Visit, and Consultation Meeting for the ongoing project, โSMS in Aquafeeds: Development of an Alternative Aquafeed Ingredient Using Spent Mushroom Substrate (SMS),โ on April 14, 2026.
In his opening remarks, ParSU President Dr. Arnel B. Zarcedo emphasized the Universityโs commitment to becoming a knowledge-generating institution that develops technologies, products, and evidence-based solutions responsive to community needs. He underscored that beyond generating knowledge, ParSU aims to support the long-term resilience and competitiveness of the aquaculture industry.
Following this, Ms. Fedelia Flor C. Mero, Senior Supervising Research Specialist of IARRD, presented the rationale of the meeting, highlighting the value of continuous monitoring and collaboration in driving research impact. Building on this, project leader Ms. Liezel DC. Atole-Nieva shared updates on the initiative, outlining key developments, accomplishments, and next steps in advancing the use of spent mushroom substrate as an alternative aquafeed ingredient.
As highlighted during the discussions, SMS is the residual organic material left after mushrooms are harvested from their growing medium. In this project, it is being explored as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative ingredient for aquafeeds, demonstrating how agricultural byproducts can be repurposed to reduce waste and enhance aquaculture productivity.
Notably, a previous monitoring, evaluation, and field visit for the project was conducted on July 31, 2025, reflecting the ongoing commitment to track progress and ensure quality implementation.
Further, faculty and researchers pitched potential research proposals for funding support from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) during the afternoon consultation meeting, fostering collaboration and encouraging innovative ideas in aquaculture and natural resources.
This activity underscores ParSUโs commitment to advancing research and innovation while strengthening its partnership with national agencies such as DOST-PCAARRD. It also provides valuable opportunities for faculty and researchers to secure funding, enhance their research capabilities, and contribute to sustainable developmentโbenefiting not only the academic community but also the local aquaculture industry and partner communities.
