To gather critical feedback from partner institutions and sectors, Partido State University (ParSU) College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS) convened a Stakeholdersโ Consultation for the Proposed Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs Program on September 24, 2025, at the ParSU Training Hall in Sagรฑay, Camarines Sur.ย
Facilitated by Ms. Maria Christina Gumba- Garcia, Department Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB), the consultation sought to review the programโs rationale, curriculum, and career pathways, ensuring its relevance, responsiveness, and alignment with community and industry needs.ย
Key recommendations included integrating marine policy and law, enhancing practicums and community immersion, strengthening focus on sustainable fishing practices, climate change adaptation, marine protected area management, and hiring faculty with Marine Affairs expertise.ย
In attendance were representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Camarines Sur, DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office, Goa, University of Sto. Tomas-Legazpi, University of Nueva Caceres, Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology, Sorsogon State University, Local Government Units of Sagรฑay, Lagonoy, and Tinambac, Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council, Bantay Dagat, Fishersโ Associations, Parentsโ and Alumni Associations, Commission on Higher Education Regional Office V, Non-governmental organizations such as Reefs for Life, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region V, Mr. Calyd Cerio from ParSU Salogon Campus and ParSU students.ย
Their collective input will shape an academic program that will produce leaders and researchers in marine governance and sustainable resource management, thereby contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
