As requested by the Department of Education (DepEd) -- Tigaon Public Schools District Supervisor Mr. Roberto Bayonito, the School of Graduate Studies conducted the Education Summit on Reading Literacy for Elementary Pupils last September 12, 2019 at the PSU-Goa Audio Visual Room.

 

 

The registration of participants was facilitated by Ms. Yumi Vivien de Luna, SGS Faculty. There were a total of 73 participants composed of the District Supervisor, Principals and Tigaon Elementary School Teachers. The short opening program was set by the welcome remarks of Mr. Rico Saballegue, SGS Extension Coordinator. 

 

The summit proper began with the First Keynote Lecture on “Education 4.0: The Revolution must Start in the Elementary” delivered by Dr. Bernadette G. Gumba, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. This was followed by the presentation of research results by Master of Arts in Education Graduates.

 

The said researches were entitled, "A Case Study on Reading Level, Intervention Strategies and Grade 6 Pupils," "The Effect of Project RePo on Student’s Reading Skills and Behaviors," and "A Case Study on Reading Performance and Reading Difficulties using MTB-MLE Reading Materials of Grade 1 Pupils." The reactors to the presentations were Ms. Nora Bacares, Ms. Michelle Yoro and Ms. Mayumi Morallo, all of whom are faculty members of the Graduate School.

In the afternoon, three (3) elementary school teachers of the Tigaon District were given the opportunity to share their experiences, best practices and the challenges they encountered in teaching reading. This was followed by an open forum.

 After the discussions, the Second Keynote Lecture was on "Issues, Challenges and Trends in Reading" given by Dr. Josefina A. Borromeo, VP for Academic Affairs and likewise SGS Faculty. This was followed by the presentation of the Programs and Policies in Reading by the Schools District Supervisor, Mr. Roberto Bayonito.

At about 3:00 pm, the participants had a workshop on the Action Plan for a Reading Program. Outputs were presented and discussed. The closing program was highlighted by the awarding of certificates to the speakers and participants. The closing remarks was given by Ms. Marilou Barcela, the Project Leader.
